For your listening pleasure ...

... and I'm not kidding. The next time someone complains about contemporary classical music, send them this. I had the honor once of interviewing Lou Harrison. I learned a lot of lasting lessons from that chat, some of which I am only now coming to appreciate.

  2. I corresponded with Harrison briefly in the 60s or 70s. I shared his fascination with the gamelan orchestra. He made use of it in remarkable ways. With Cage, he shared the belief that all sounds are musical, but he was immune to Cage's Buddhist-inspired use of indeterminancy. Both men were great innovators. Compare either to Copland, Thomson, or, for that matter, Carter.
