I am delighted to see that Jacques Barzun is still publishing. Some years ago, browsing the remainders shelves at a local store, I was brought up by the title Why Arnold Matters. Goodness, I thought, wasn't Lionel Trilling the last one who thought so? I pulled the book out and found that "Arnold" was not Matthew Arnold but Arnold Schwarzenegger.
And I guess he turned out not to matter.
I am much more likely to reread some of Matthew's essays than to watch any of Schwarzenegger's movies, though I tend to agree with what G.K. Chesterton somewhere says about Matthew Arnold--more distinguished for wider information than for superior intelligence.
This won't actually have effect, I suppose like this.
