At one point in my peculiar career I had the opportunity to edit works written by people in the academy, both professors and people writing dissertations. I was always amazed at how what passed for thought among consisted in moving about, as it were, various concepts and catch phrases. There was getting them out of the habit. That is how they thought and they could no other. I think that is what happens when getting some letters after your name, letters that used to mean having attained a certain mastery of a subject, became just getting another credential for a job.
