Q & A ...

... Ernst Tugendhat, Ulrike Herrmann: "The time for philosophising is over" (20/08/2007) - signandsight.

Mysticism and egocentricity are not mutually exclusive. I believe a person never gets past taking himself seriously, even as a mystic. Because in doing mysticism, he is interested in the fact that HE is doing mysticism. There is this gap between taking-oneself-exaggeratedly-seriously and the serenity of relativising oneself, putting oneself into perspective.

  1. Yet another complete misunderstanding of mysticism.

To ascribe ego-based motives to mystics is so ridiculous it's laughable, because only a false mystic does that. Real mystics, from St. Teresa on, all know that it is about completely leaving the ego behind.

When will people ever learn that mysticism is experiential, not intellectual?
