A thought for the new year ...

I think I have mentioned here before that the final movement of Poulenc's Gloria always makes me feel actually sorry -- as opposed to embarrassed or whatever -- for my sins.  "You know that I am as sincere in my faith," Poulenc once said, "without any messianic screamings, as I am in my Parisian sexuality." Those of us who really have faith in God tend to be abashed when it occurs to us that God may be more forgiving of us than we are, at times, of ourselves.
