She can think for herself …

Camille Paglia: On Trump, Democrats, Transgenderism, and Islamist Terror | The Weekly Standard.

Drunk with words, spin, and snark, middle-class journalists can't be bothered to notice the complex physical constructions that make modern civilization possible. The laborers who build and maintain these marvels are recognized only if they can be shoehorned into victim status. But if they dare to think for themselves and vote differently from their liberal overlords, they are branded as rubes and pariahs.

  1. I might be more inclined to credit Trump with understanding building and labourers if he had ever done any of that physical labour himself. There is a lot to be said for working your way up from the bottom (or at least working alongside those whom you employ for a time, learning about what it means to lay bricks, or to rush from hotel room to hotel room, stripping the dirty sheets and scrubbing the toilets, for example.)

Also, Paglia may have forgotten that quite a number of her middle-class journalists and so-called liberal overlords may have actually worked in low-paying, sometimes backbreaking jobs to finance their educations. One of my sons, for example, who spent several summers working as an assistant fitter and turner before university, reminds me that it was the best social education he got.

  2. I, too, benefitted greatly from working on a crew building stores back in the '70s. It was how I supplemented my erratic freelance income, and how I learned a bit of carpentry from a master carpenter. But I will say that the guy footing the bill (the owner of the store) tended to be more aware of such matters than your average journalist.

  4. BTW, don't get me wrong. Paglia is worth reading.

  5. Much to recommend in this piece, but I am unsure about the pharma industry being responsible for a greater number of trans people undergoing GRA. It is possible that Big Pharma benefits from heightened awareness and greater incidence of surgery but that's correlation, not causation.
