... in 1897, was the great Henry Cowell, who should be far better known and more widely played than he is.

  1. I totally agree with you about Cowell. I've played a number of his solo piano works, especially the more "experimental" ones. He was not only a great composer, he was great teacher, who introduced a whole generation of American composers to non-Western music, for example.

  2. Lou Harrison told me once that it was Henry Cowell who taught him what to do with a melody once you came up with one.
