There is something missing in de Botton, and I have to think that it is the ability or willingness to evaluate his own ideas as if they were somebody else's. I think that he has a reasonable degree of intelligence; yet evidently the thoughts that other men set aside for a day or two, return to, and discard with wonder or shame or relief, he admires and spins books out of.
