This or that …

… Reading Upward by Tim Parks | NYRblog | The New York Review of Books. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

So do people pass from the genre to the literary up our neo-Platonic ladder? Do they discover Stieg Larsson and move on to Pamuk? With no studies or statistics available to settle the question—at least I have not come across any—I can only resort to anecdotal evidence, as a father of three and a university teacher for many years. And the first thing to say is that no one has ever spoken to me of making this progression.

  1. I suppose this is reading sideways, but Tim Parks also wrote an article in the LRB recently that you might find interesting. It's about Return of the Native and I really enjoyed it: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v36/n14/tim-parks/bitten-by-an-adder
