Wisdom …

James Baldwin on the Creative Process and the Artist’s Role to Society – 1962.. (Hat tip, Rus Bowden.)

“Freedom is not something that anybody can be given; freedom is something people take and people are as free as they want to be. One hasn’t got to have an enormous military machine in order to be un-free when it’s simpler to be asleep, when it’s simpler to be apathetic, when it’s simpler, in fact, not to want to be free, to think that something else is more important”

  1. What James Baldwin is talking about is political freedom. Unless you live in a concentration camp you have political freedom. You go into Philadelphia and see drug dealers and gangsters and you realize that men have the freedom to break the law. What we don't have is freedom from natural law. Men are composed of the same particles as everything else in the universe. That is what Science teaches us. We can not break the physical laws of the universe that control our bodies.
