In talks I have given I have frequently noted how, when one goes to a film based on a novel one has read and enjoyed, one often ends up disappointed. This is because one has imagined it all differently. I note this in talks in order to underscore the extent to which reading involves the exercise of the reader's imagination. I mention it now in order to preface this link to the Guardian, which has a whole special section on The Art of Adaptation.
I think that short stories and novellas make the best films. Novels are best left to mini-series. And probably my favorite adaptation, qua adaptation, is John Huston's The Man Who Would Be King.
