A few years ago I introduced Peter Straub at a book fair and one of the things he talked about was how, when you start a book, you naturally have in mind some sort of plan, however vague, and you usually start your focus on a particular character. But he cautioned that you have to pay attention to the periphery, to that character on the sidelines waving his arms and crying out, "Forget about him! I'm the one you want to write about."
