More on Stoppard ...

... and Berlin: Stoppard has Oprah-effect for book about Russian Thinkers. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

I wonder if Berlin discusses Lev Shestov.

Or, you can be lazy and just read the articles in the "Lincoln Center Theatre Review," available for a $1 donation, all over the Vivian Beaumont. The review includes several lively essays, including one called "The Presiding Spirit of Isaiah Berlin," and anohter titled "The Fox and the Hedgehog" by another very smart playwright named Paul Rudnick. There's great stuff in there, too, about George Sand (important in the plays, as is Pushkin), and two lively interviews with Margaret Atwood and Tatyana Tolstoya. Oh yes: And a snippet of Ivan Turgenev's "Sportsman's Sketches." Honestly, it's worth the buck!

I *loved* the first of the trilogy and immediately bought tix to 2 and 3. This play has a huge scope and huge cast, but is also funny, poignant, and full of stand-out characters and actors (Hawke, O'Byrne, Plimpton, and especially Billy Crudup).

I'd recommend this trilogy to anyone -- Stoppard is the genius of our time, but I think this work is not only brilliant but *accessible*.
