Proto-modern ...

... The Munro Doctrine of Humor. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

This plot line is certainly prescient: "... two boys deprived of war toys quickly transform their John Stuart Mill doll into the 18th-century French army commander Marshal Saxe."

The idea of a John Stuart Mill doll is truly terrifying.

So, even a statue of a liberal scares you, huh? Tsk, tsk, Frank .. they're really not THAT bad. Just compare, liberal doll v. the REAL Darth Cheney, it's not even close which is scarier. Not even close.

  2. Actually, I like John Stuart Mill. It'd the idea of a John Stuart Mill doll. Nowhere near as cuddly as a Dick Cheney doll.
Mill, by the way, was a 19th-century liberal, like me, which is to say a libertarian.

Imagine a Harriet Taylor doll to go with John Stuart Mill! He wrote that she taught him everything about physical intimacy, ecstasy. Yuck. I mean, all right for them, but give me Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Anatomically correct dolls of middle-aged socialist intellectuals are probably pretty horrific. And this pair only got married after her hub died -- 21 years after they'd first met and become friends.
