The Kindergarchy ...

" ... child-like nonsense and opacity are accepted as successful poetics. John Ashbery comes particularly to mind." This reflects a common view of Ashbery that I do not share. When I read Ashbery, I immediately think of all the art openings I have gone to (and Ashbery, as an art critic, must have gone to vastly more). If you stand off by yourself at an art opening and just listen to the snippets of conversation going on all around you, it will start sounding remarkably like an Ashbery poem. And if you read his poems with that experience in mind, they tend to seem far less opaque.
