The red-hot British actress is in negotiations to play Zany Zelda, the wife American novelist F, Scott Fitzgerald took in 1920 (or so reports say).
The film, The Beautiful and Damned, examines the relationship between the author of The Great Gatsby and Zelda Sayre (immemmortalised in a biography penned by Nancy Milford, BTW).
Actually, it is "The Beautiful and Damned" (as, apparently, the film title has it). The lack of the second definite article makes all the difference.
ReplyDeleteGood eye, Ed. Thanks; and, of course, you're right. I just hope no one from the Leo Forum's reading this (because I used to participate before the ConTrolls got on their wreck 'n' rolls; and, it drove me up one wall and down t'other whenever anyone called "Bird On The Wire" "Bird On A Wire." In this instance, the switcheroo abso-deffo makes all the difference, too).
ReplyDeleteDuring one of our get-to-gets, I asked him whether he was reading Understanding Media when he wrote that tune and he responded — wait for it — "I dipped into it here and there; it was in the air at the time, you know?"
Actually, Cohen wrote the song as a lament for the coming of [*ahem*]hydra-electricity to the pristine dis-connected Greek isle of Hydra (where he was living at the time).
So, yes, we both understand exactly why that "the" would also throw Fitzgerald's intentions with that title into chaos.
Once a bird's-eye book editor, always an eagle-eye betterer, Roger. Over and outstanding. Ta.
p.s. Good to see you; I'll make more mistakes, on purposeur, if that's what it takes . . . was thinking of you yesterday scanning January list; Larry Watson's on it! Made my dinner :)
