Scruples ...

... `Chipped Off the Latin'.

Interesting: "... from scrupus – a sharp stone or pebble. In other words, scruples are like having a stone in your shoe."

This brings to mind that scandal comes from the Greek skandalon, meaning "a stumbing block."
