Changing times ...

... Dammed If You Do | Via Meadia.

Particularly out west, where many massive dams were erected by gung-ho progressives around the turn of the last century, the destruction of fisheries and the loss of opportunities for commercial and recreational use of rivers is starting to outweigh the increasingly obsolete benefits of the old dams.

  1. Yes, but think of all folks in the southwest with cheap hydropower and a thriving defense industry who decided that they were rugged individualists. The New Deal, assisted considerably by the wars that followed, went a long way to create Sun Belt Republicanism.

  2. I don't see the connections myself. All sorts of things factor into a person's choice of political party, not least changes in a given party itself. I'm a registered Libertarian, but I grew up in a household where people blessed themselves at the mention of FDR. But the Democratic Party of those days bears little resemblance to the one today.
