Excusez-moi ...

... but not really moi: The Social Affairs Unit - Web Review: Theodore Dalrymple explains why political apologies for the past actions of others have become so flourishing a genre - it is precisely because they are so meaningless and useless. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

  1. Back in I think 2006 we happened to be in London, and my son and I looked in on Parliament, arriving for Question Time. Somebody had raised a question concerning an apology for the British role in slavery and the slave trade. A Tory back-bencher popped up and asked whether the government had considered apologizing to women everywhere for Henry VIII's behavior. I wish I could remember whether he raised a laugh.
