... Music Training Enhances Children’s Verbal Intelligence - Miller-McCune. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

The results showed, in Moreno’s words, “a rapid transfer of cognitive benefits” for the music students. Specifically, those who received music training raised their scores the visual-intelligence test.

  1. Hi Frank,

The best argument for not dropping music programs in schools has always been that music students tend to do well in life. I am not sure what study or studies this old knowledge goes back to, but it must have been the groundwork for the hypotheses which led to this Canadian study.

And just to note, my son Sam who has his PhD in Materials Science from Dartmouth, and is doing post-doc work at NIST in Gaithesburg MD, spent 8 years in the music programs in the Dracut MA school system, playing in the award-winning high school band. I have used him as an example when I have told about the correlation between success later in life and having a musical background. It is no accident.
