Sci-Fi and innovation ...

The problem I have with this is the implication - or at least my perhaps mistaken inference - that we need someone or some agency or maybe all of us in collusion or ... I'm not sure, to decree and manage this. Who ordered James Watt to invent the steam engine? Or the Wright brothers the airplane?
Innovation of that magnitude cannot be programmed. It's individuals being ... individuals. It is the sort of stuff that any evangelical evolutionist ought to delight in. But their countervailing tendency seems to want to manage everything.
