The endangered book review ...

... Poisoning the Well.

I can't say that I disagree with this exactly - no surprise there, I suppose - but I can't help thinking that abandoning book reviews poses a greater danger to newspapers than it does to reviews or reviewers or literature. Reviewing will continue to take place in some way, shape or form. But there will be one less reason to pick up a newspaper.

Interesting talk Mr. Waters gave. Too bad most of the critics he named (Mary McCarthy, et al) are dead. Still, I guess they remain role models!

  2. One less reason for an intelligent reader interested in more than local news to pick up the newspaper, yes. To list all the reasons my newspaper has given me for not reading it would be too depressing a task.
