Robert Fulford on Malcolm Gladwell:

Riches Exhumed from the Footnotes.

What a mind!

  1. Which one? Fulford's or Gladwell's? I'm reading Gladwell's The Tipping Point right at the moment, and though he's a fun writer, there isn't as much substance as I'd hoped.

  2. Well, Lee, you know me; I'm trying to work the angle on ambiguity. (But, if I had to choose between the two, I'd take Fulford's in a nano-sec.)

  3. BTW, everyone else I've read seems to believe The Tipping Point and Blink are the cat's pajams. Since I've not read either (and don't see either in my immediate vicinity in terms of used-bookery), I'd be interested in hearing (now or upon completion) what your final thoughts on TTP are. Also, if I'm not mistaken, 2666's on your menu of reading fare?

When it comes to excellent opinions on both, I'd trust you over a hack or ninety-two.

  4. Heh, Judith, my critical skills are paltry, worse than hackish, but yes, I intend to read 2226 - not sure when though.

I'll get back to you on TTP soon, since it's a fast read.(Have you got an email? Mine's on my blogs.) My initial thoughts are that 1) Gladwell's a good storyteller; 2) he's got a real gift for discerning patterns (or imposing them); 3) a lot of his explanations don't really explain much beyond what common sense tells us; 4)his evidence tends to be too anecdotal; 5) he asks an obscene amount of money for a single corporate speech, something like $50,000.

OK, I'll grant you that point 5 may be a bit irrelevant. But it annoys me.
