If superstring theory and other untestable hypotheses signal the demise of true, empirical science, it is a tragedy for humanity. For all its achievements, science has been something of a disappointment. It has left us still plagued with warfare, disease, poverty, ethnic conflict and a multitude of lesser evils. It has crushed the superstitions that made life meaningful without offering us a comforting substitute. As Steven Weinberg himself once put it, "The more the universe becomes comprehensible, the more it seems pointless."
