The future of newspapers ...

... may be here: Updated Journal writes its future. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

  1. Early on on the net, publishers and editors felt inferior to established print ventures. This article points out the advantage of synergy. Unfortunately, no recruitment of net writers seems to occur in this synergy--only the transposition of print writers to online. This is still a sticking point: How to get paid or recognized on the web. It's not happening after all this time, though some online journals pay now, like Blackbird and Pedestal. I have found a net reputation of no use in trying to pierce the veil of established print journals. I see no immediate indications that we shall ever be anything but second-rate in the larger literary world, even if one has more references than a Pulitzer Prize winner. I don't mean to sound bitter; the obvious solution for the present is to pursue publication in print. If you make it in print you'll likely end up on the net as well.

  2. In my small way, C.E., as you know, I have attempted to rectify this. Quite a few bloggers have become regular reviewers for The Inquirer. Slowly but surely, I think that sort of thing will become commoner.
