    One of the things about this "debate" that bothers me is how very either/or polarized it quickly becomes.

    For a genuinely third perspective, I recommend Freeman Dyson. A review of his latest book of essays is here.

    Thanks for the link, Art. I happen to be a huge Dyson fan myself, probably because I share something of his temperament, even if nothing of his brilliance.
