For a different - though not exactly contrary - view, see Odd Nerdrum ...on Kitsch. Nerdum, if I understand him, is arguing that modernism branded as kitsch any art that maintained an allegiance to tradition. What he says about Sibelius, however, is debatable. The Finnish composer may have been accused by modernist critics of writing kitsch, but neither the sixth nor the seventh symphonies are at all "disharmonious." Sibelius simply carried his preoccupation with formal concentration to a point beyond which it was hard to go. After Tapiola, what?
