... I take a look at the Library of America: Library of America gathers great writing. (Don't know how H.P. Lovecraft managed to rechristened P.G. It's H.P. in my copy.)
... Two memoirs at opposite poles.
... Ed Champion ponders The Iraq surge: Success or failure? (This is a fine review.)
... Collected joy: Oppen's poems.
P. G. Lovecraft? Well, whichever way you choose to name the pulp horror master, I am still staggering under the shock of Lovecraft getting inducted in the Library of America hall of fame and perpetuity. Yes, I like Lovecraft, and I was pleased to have received my very own review copy of the Lovecraft collection from LOA when it appeared a couple of years ago, but I never would have thought that LOA would canonize the scoundrel. Of course, tastes being tastes, we could probably go through the LOA catalogue and have plenty of discussions about who does or does not deserve to be included in their permanent (never to go out of print) collection. (And as for Cheever being more frightening than Lovecraft, I think you may have a good point; in particular, I admire Cheever's talent and his work but remain relieved that I have not had to live his kind of life.)
