Well, if LEFT HANDED WOMAN seemed too long, why not try CROSSING THE SIERRA DEL GREDOS @ 350 k words. it would be nice to see your review, unless it is entirely that of a dunce I'll post it at the handke prose site [1]. i happen to love how concentrated, how laconic, eliminating everything superflous LEFT HANDED is, that is how efficient it is. of course for people who are used to reading newspaper prose... or most u.s. fiction... not having read OMEGA yet.. however, there is no comparing the greatness of handke with de lillo, they play in different leagues.

Oh, I wrote it many years ago for Best Sellers and I have no idea where a copy might be found. I have no objection to concentration. My problem was that I found it contrived. Remember when the little boy says to his mother, "I'm unhappy, too"? Well, I was young at the time and maybe more cynical than I should have been. But I laughed out loud when I read that. But thanks for the links. I'll take a look. And just because I didn't like it, doesn't mean that it's bad. It means that I didn't like it.
OK Frank. Handke said later that while he wrote it he compulsively went to porno houses! Since after a spectacular start to his career he had been brought low by [a] his mother's suicide [SORROW BEYOND DREASM] and [2] his first wife leaving him [you can see the crises in the following works, the three long poems of NONSENSE AND HAPPINESS, the novel A MOMENT OF TRUE FEELING and the diary-novel of spontaneous jottings WEIGHT OF THE WORLD] LEFT HANDED is mythic, open, and imagined of what it might be like to leave, say as his wife, did her husband, and - wishfulfilment - with less figting, although, and i think this is acutely, observed, the male then pissing together with the others, reversion to the male horde from marriage now that he's been kicked out of the house. it has a beautiful movement, LEFT HANDED WOMAN, and that is when Handke started to translate, since that was the profession he gave her and wanted to see what that was like. the publisher who appears with bouquet acourting is Dr. Siegfried Unseld, Handke's German publisher, a hounddog for wives of his authors who had been abandoned and needed a flirt. handke does this descriptipm like the negative of an x-ray. handke himself was left to take care of his ex-wife libgart schwartz's child, and made a really miserable father, since he needs to write nearly all the time. xx michael roloff
