I don't know if it's hypocrisy or ignorance, either, or just dumb human error, but the commentary around it all is definitely rooted in cynicism. Does that really help? Ignorance after all is curable. It's willful ignorance that's unacceptable, because willful ignorance is often the symptom of an underlying stubborn ideology.
