Worshipping a text is just another form of idolatry, but grasping what a text says on its own terms is different from that and most essential. Take the Ur-story of Adam and Eve. Most people, I suspect, reflexively think that the debut human duo did what they were told not to do. In other words, that they failed to obey a command. Actually, what they failed to do is heed a warning, and suffered the consequences they had been advised to avoid. In doing so, they forfeited their place in Paradise, where "death shall have no dominion."
