As it happens ...

... my wife and I went off to the Wissahickon this afternoon, she to paint watercolors, while I just sat and read some poetry -- Elizabeth Jennings, Kay Ryan, HD -- and looked at the changing woods. Some of the trees were already without leaves and much of the underbrush had withered entirely, leaving things much more open to view. The upshot is I haven't time to blog. So I'll simply post the little poem that came to me while I was sitting there watching.

Breaking Off

Notice the sprightly wind
Lightly divesting the trees
So that, bare, they may please
Courting winter, and invite embrace,
Disdaining any trace
Of summer’s leaving.

  1. I briefly lived in the Philadelphia area in the 1980s. The two things I miss the most are the Wissahikon and the Reading Terminal Market. Thanks for reminding me of that lovely place.

  2. Interesting.

At the same time I was down at the Schuylkill river in West Conshohocken with my two younger sons eating happy meals and throwing rocks in the water.

We only live 4 blocks from the other side of the river. I have to make it a point to get there more often now. Since they are no longer impressed by valley green :)

    Take care
