Delicious irony ...

... Patrick J. Buchanan's Know-Nothing History is the right-wing counterpart to Nicholson Baker's Human Smoke.

I remember when Buchanan, during one of his bids for the presidency, was waxing lyrical about factory towns. I thought at the time that only the son of a lawyer who grew up comfortably middle-class in Washington, D.C., could possibly feel nostalgic for factory life. My mother, who worked in factories for 50 years - starting at age 13 - certainly had no fond memories of them.
