Reading and writing both are active enterprises - you image the scene and the characters and the action that the novelist describes. This has to be better for you than just sitting in front of a TV or a movies screen and having stuff presented to you pre-fabricated as it were. OK from time to time, for sure, but apt to atrophy the imagination if done too much.
