A very important anniversary ...

... Constitution Day.

I sometimes get the impression that what others do not understand about this country and its constitution is that the latter document does not grant any of us any rights. It enumerates unalienable rights that we have been endowed with by our creator (to quote the Declaration). Americans are citizens, not subjects. As my favorite - and certainly the funniest - Vice-President, Thomas R. Marshall, put it: "an American ...looks up to nobody, looks down upon nobody, but tries to keep a conscience clean enough that he can look everybody in the face."
