Theists and atheists alike agree that life and being, so far as we can tell, are gratuitous, something given. We ourselves do not account for them. We think we know something about their ingredients and the recipe. The manner of preparation eludes us entirely. Atheists think it all just simply happened. Theists have a hunch there's a someone behind it. Both have erected subtle and ingenious systems of thought to justify thinking as they do. But it seems unlikely that anyone will ever, by means of reason alone, conclusively demonstrate either one position or the other. Both, however, demand submission to necessity, whatever its precise nature.
