Learning to be free ....

... Why Liberal Education Matters.

The true aim of the humanities is to prepare citizens for exercising their freedom responsibly.

The aim of such an education is to prepare one for leading a fully human life, and such a life is not possible unless one is free

  1. Frank, let me make two points:
    (1) Liberal education is a vanishing species at American campuses where the emphasis is more and more upon specific career preparation; universities have catered to student (and student family) preferences by becoming vocational technical schools in too many cases. As a university instructor, I see the good old fashioned liberal arts education fading, fading, fading away.
