July 4, I believe marked the sixth anniversary of ENC Press, which was founded and is run by my WFTC colleague Olga Gardner Galvin. I didn't want to post about this on a holiday weekend, so I waited until today. And I thought the best way to introduce you to the Press would be to provide some links:
Letter From the Publisher.
About ENC Press.
A Few Lessons Learned About Publishing in America.
A podcast With Olga Gardner Galvin, founder and publisher, ENC Press.
Finally, here's a bit about ENC's latest: Monkey See, by Walt Maguire.
What is learned from a few lessons about publishing? That it is a corrupt enterprise from top to bottom. Loaded with egomaniacs and arrogant, lazy, Luddites enthralled with killing trees and selling paper.
ReplyDeleteIs this anything at all worth pursuing? Not if one is sane.
Better to start a parallel industry (based on .. oh, I don't know, electrons in the ether, how about that) and do everything in your power to destroy the corrupt paperselling parasites. Now wouldn't that be something to support?

Well, I think there are publishers and there are publishers. I would cite Paul Dry of Paul Dry Books and George Gibson of Walker & Co. as the genuine article - people who read the books they publish and care about the books, the authors, and their readers. I thin people like Paul and George deserve respect. I don't know Olga personally, but I suspect she is in the same category. What you say, Blue, does apply to much of the corporate, conglomerate publishing world, but even there, one meets people who are committed to quality books. A one-size opinion does not fit all.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Frank. I think ENC is an example of those out to destroy the corporate parasites. 'Monkey see' has an e-book version for $5. Now, if only they would abandon that $11 print version, maybe they could lower the price of the E-version another buck.

For once, Blue, we find ourselves converging. I trust you saw my post in which I made mention of you. This blog would be much dimished without your input.
ReplyDeleteYes, Frank, I did see the mention. Since yours is one of my favorite blogs, it pleases me greatly that you think of me as an interesting character.
ReplyDeleteThe Books, Inq. blog is one of the best of the net and it's ALL your fault.

Actually, if this blog is interesting. it's because it attracts people like you.
