Play ball ...

... Baseball novels from top to bottom.

Mike Peich, the director of the WCU Poetry Conference, and I went to the Phillies game last night, which turned out to be the highest-scoring game in the franchise's history. Mike has season tickets and the seats were right down along the first base line. Going to a baseball game always makes me feel young again.

  1. How fun! They must serve Philly cheesesteaks at the ballpark.

  2. I'm sure they do, but they are probably overpriced, and I live in the Italian Market, around the corner from Pat's Steaks. If you are ever down this way, try Lorenzo's at 9th & Christian. Or alert me and I'll take you on a tour.

  3. I was at the Cubs game here in Chicago last night: less historic than the Philllies' romp, but quite good nonetheless--a 6:05 start, and the game was over and I was walking out of the ballpark before it was dark outside! Summer at its best . . .

  4. On the broadcast of the Cubs game they were following the Phillies game closely to see how high the score would get.

  5. Hate to play the grumpy old man here, but I don’t like going to the ballpark as much as I used to. Rock music blares between innings as if you might get bored and wouldn’t know what to do with yourself if there was nothing else going on. Teenaged girls in short shorts dance on the Astros’ dugout, slinging wadded-up T-shirts to the crowd. Video-game “races” are shown on the huge scoreboard while the crowd roars.

    What happened to the baseball?

  6. There is much in what you say, D.G. There were some troglodytes out of central casting sitting behind us who for awhile made hearing anything impossible with their vulgar loudness and loutiness. The rock music was kept to a minimum at the game I attended. No girls in shorts dancing on the dugout, but I could have put up with that.

  7. Not quite the same, but I have always enjoyed W.P. Kinsella's collection of short stories, "The Dixon Cornbelt League."

Wow! Historic night to be at the ballpark. And I really love Citizen's Bank Park. Spent my birthday there (May 12) watching the Phillies beat the Dodgers and grumpy-faced Joe Torre.
