Vampires, you say? Eschewing the literal and embracing the metaphorical, we need not look very far to find real live blood-suckers thriving on the life-giving-blood of men, women, and children: we call them by another name--American politicians.
However, that kind of political commentary (or, for that matter, free speech of any kind)--according to today's news reports--is on the verge of becoming a federal crime. Those guys and gals in Congress (God bless them everyone!) are contemplating "hate crime" legislation that will criminalize certain kinds of speech that is offensive, inappropriate, provocative, etc. Well, that sounds like a really lovely and special kind of vampirism to me. What say you?
I have piece that relates to what you are saying, R.T., that will be in The Inquirer on Sunday. You may find it interesting. I may find I have to look for a new career.
I do not, however, look forward to many more years during which I and other like-minded individuals must look forward to an increasingly pernicious government that seems determined to subvert all positive aspects of the American way of life.
Were I younger, like my son and his wife, and like my students, I would be horribly concerned about the future. Instead, since I am into my autumn and must contend with the onslaught of winter, I can only wistfully and fretfully observe and comment, though my freedom to comment upon and make common sense of everything that is happening--i.e., commenting in the classroom, on the Internet, and among friends--may soon be a relic of a bygone era.
